How do I build a business that is authentic to me and my identity?
The quality of your life is heavily influenced by whether you are living from borrowed expectations or from an examined career identity.
So many people confuse “I can do this career” or “I love this business” with “Should I build my life around this business?” Then they experience burnout or try to change careers or start a business when they are 40, 50 or 60.
As an entrpreneurial business owner with my husband Capt. Ryan Van Fleet of Good Karma Sportfishing and Educational Programs, we created and built our business based on our ingrained identities (including Human Design) and it has morphed from there.
And since “Not everyday is sunshine and rainbows,” you really need to love what you do along with having grit, perservence, and support.
We recorded this episode as the identity conversation is huge and still, people are having an identity crisis which bleeds into comparison, judgment, social media and more.
If you are someone who is struggling with their career identity, please use these questions to help you get grounded:
—Where do I consistently feel more energized?
—What environments drain me?
—What decisions repeatedly prove correct for me?
—What kinds of problems do I enjoy solving?
Sit with these, over time, and see what evolves. We all have gifts that are our purpose and passion— Ikigai.
Your capability is not the same as your career calling and if you do not realize this is will lead to burnout. You don’t know you’ve found the right path because it’s easy. You know you’ve found the right path because the hard work still feels worth doing.
Be the person who builds a life and business out of expressing who you are.
